Querencia - (keh-ren-sia) - Spanish
(n.) a calming place where one feels safe, a place from which one’s strength of strength is drawn; where one feels at home.
When I was commissioned for this piece, my collectors came to me and said, “when we built the house, we wanted a sense of a calm feeling in certain areas since the pace of life always seems to be going so fast. We wanted some areas to be a calming presence where you can walk in and exhale”.
The name "Querencia" immediately came to mind for this piece. When creating Querencia, I had the intention of this series to bring calming and zen energy. The design is based off my legendary series, which pairs free flowing movement with the strength of a solid line. The series is all about balance, which I felt very fitting. In the midst of a chaotic and fast paced world, it is important to counterbalance those energies. To have a calming presence in the midst of all the chaos.
The solid line carried through all three pieces in this triptych grounds the piece and signifies strength. It was created using sand from the beach of Tulum. In my opinion, Tulum is one of the most calming and revitalizing places on earth. The free flowing movement at the base dances beautifully in the light. By day it keeps a softer presence, and under spotlight dramatically radiates warmth from the layers of paint and gold. The cold grey layers are contrasted beautifully with the shimmers of gold. 24k gold has been woven through both the stone and the base of this piece to give it a cohesive and glowing look.
