With Mar y Sol, artist Kim Rose offers a luminous and deeply personal tribute to her late mother, Marisol—the woman who first nurtured her creative spirit and unknowingly set her on the path to becoming an artist. The title, derived from the poetic breakdown of her mother’s name—“Mar” (sea), “y” (and), “Sol” (sun)—serves as both a literal and symbolic anchor for the work. But for Rose, the painting reaches far beyond translation. It is, at its core, an embodiment of memory, loss, and the radiant legacy of maternal love.

Rose describes her mother as her earliest champion—an ever-encouraging force who never minded the mess of art-making and always made room for dreams. Her mother’s passing marked the most profound rupture in Rose’s life, yet also the beginning of a new chapter: one defined by courage, vulnerability, and a commitment to creative purpose.
