With Apricity, artist Kim Rose introduces a quietly powerful new chapter in her practice, both conceptually and technically. Named after the poetic term meaning “the warmth of the sun during winter,” Apricity evoked for Rose not only the grandeur of the sun, but the restorative light it offers during even the coldest seasons of life.

This painting is a culmination of curiosity, experimentation, and the pursuit of balance. As Rose developed Apricity, she innovated new techniques, most notably in the treatment of the black stone surface. The result is a finish that recalls the richness of black velvet: matte, tactile, and deeply absorptive. It captures light not by reflecting it, but by holding it close, creating a striking contrast to the gilded elements that shimmer and glow atop its surface.

From afar, the piece presents a unified elegance. Up close, it reveals intricate textures and countless hidden details within the base layer, each one adding depth and quiet movement. The interaction between the elements—light and shadow, softness and strength—offers a meditation on duality, much like the season from which the work draws its name.
